FIND YOUR JEWISH ROOTS

The Illiana Jewish Genealogical Society (IJGS) is comprised of people researching their Jewish roots--people whose families came to the United States from all parts of the world. Most are Jewish, some are not, but they seek to reclaim the history of some Jewish ancestry. Usually they live in Illinois or Northwest Indiana. However, IJGS has members from all over the country.

PROGRAM

Experts present monthly programs on diverse topics for both beginning and advanced researchers. Past programs have included Research in the National Archives, How to Find Missing Persons, Research in the Family History Library (Mormon LDS), Growing Up Jewish, Jews of the Calumet Region, etc.

Meetings are held from September through May on the third Sunday of each month at 2:30p.m. at Congregation Am Echad, 160 Westwood Drive, Park Forest, Illinois.

NEWSLETTER

All members receive our quarterly newsletter which keeps them informed of upcoming meetings, newly-available resources, and events in both the Jewish and general genealogical communities. The IJGS Newsletter is also distributed to other Jewish genealogical societies around the world.

LIBRARY

IJGS has a large library available to its members. The books deal with common genealogical sources and specialize in material of particular interest to those doing Jewish research. Many items are not available elsewhere in the local area. The library also contains microfiche of interest, as well as articles, journals and audiocassettes.

COMPUTERIZED JEWISH GENEALOGICAL FAMILY FINDER

Our library has a printout of the Jewish Genealogical Family Finder which is available on the World Wide Web. Many people have found relatives through the Jewish Genealogical Family Finder.

SUMMER CONFERENCE

The IJGS is a member of the Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies (AJGS). Each summer the AJGS holds a conference where top-notch speakers bring all the latest news of Jewish genealogical research to participants. It is a wonderful time for meeting fellow Jewish genealogists from all over the world. Many an unknown relative has been discovered in the hotel elevator. Some of the conference locations have been: Jerusalem, Salt lake City, Washington, D.C., New York City, Boston, Paris, Los Angeles, and New York (1999).
